Arabesque- Graphic Design from the Arab region and Persia

My work has been published recently in Arabesque - a book that features graphic design work from the Arab region and Iran. Work that deals mainly with Arabic Typography and Arabic Calligraphy.

The book features great work. I was really fascinated with the amount of talented Arabic and Iranian designers who has been doing a lot of great and inspiring work with Arabic typography and calligraphy. I personally think every designer and student should buy this book, it will help develop our type skills and allow us to think how to integrate Arabic type in a more interesting way in our personal or commercial work.

the book has been done by EPS 51 who also designed Talib Font, which I have featured before in the blog.

i love arabic typography and calligraphy
there is just SO MUCH TO LEARN! and i personally think it is so damn intresting!!

Iam in Holland, the plan is to apply for school.. though i dont know if iam fully convinced that i should apply! the thing is, when you spend 3 years working it gets harder to make a decision to apply for school.. when you do a real experience, projects that you know it gets you somewhere! emmmm.. makes you wonder and ask yourself why do I need MA...

emmmmm... ok i know what i like, i like to work on Arabic type and Arabic based projects! meaning projects that focuses mainly on Arab culture, and focuses on showing the beauty of the Arab artistic elements.

I just personally think that Arabic Type and Calligraphy, is something beautiful..
In my training here at Tarek Atrissi studio, iam at last getting to work on projects that i seriously love... Alot of Arabic calligraphy work involved, looking alot at other peopls work, trying different kind of arabic type and calligraphy approaches... I would like to buy alot of books about arabic calligraphy, so much to look at and read..

Alot of them are in french though, blekh..i wish id understand... its a shame how there are little arabic published good books about calligraphy, and meanwhile youd buy arabic calligraphy great books published in french only...emmmmm makes me wonder..

well then i think again about the MA idea, if i do it.. itll be a good way to spend experimenting and exploring arabic type.. that is one of the things that keeps me attached to the idea of MA...

She lies, she smiles as she set her timer
the alarm that awakens her from all things beautiful
her soft hands gather the drapes once and twice for warmth
as her mind sets between the feathers of reality

A breath, a melody that reveals
as the versus repeat
and the flashes race down
her veins, her existence
dreamingly it all begins once again

Her soul awakes as the drapes are carried away
and her silent figure forms

Jordan rocks!!! its all happening in my home country jordan, Blouzaat is a store that opened in Amman, Jordan. Four guys are behind this great work Ahmad Sabbagh and Mohammad Assaf from jordan, Michael and Falk from Germany.... Its about Urban Art, very experimental, Great illustrations!!!! oooff... stunning! I cant wait to be in Jordan and go check out the store in an area in Amman called Jabal Amman " Rainbow street!!" :) the t-shirt prints, are expressing daily life issues and they would play around with the idea and make it look sarcastic.

oh and i love the little wooden boxes in the store, i think the interior is v.simple yet has a great character.

A sister a friend a great fashion designer!! She started her fashion brand " Toksic" a year back and since then she has been successfully working on making it all happen. She has been selling her work since then at boutiques in Dubai ( Amzan, Cube, etc..) I just love how she combines different material together, the Bright fun colors adds great character to the style. Her personality is very much reflected in her designs, and I personally believe a designer always reflect his personality and style on his work. Born in Iraq, Basra City 1974, started practicing calligraphy in 1984, when the primary school teacher Mr. Muhammad Ridha Suhail and his parents guided and encouraged him. and since that he became passionate to the art of Arabic calligraphy till he started his career as a professional calligrapher and graphic designer in 1990. After his graduation from the Civil Engineering Department from Basra University in 1996 he carried on self-taught by closely observing and studying the calligraphy of the masters of this art in Turkey like Sami Eﬁndi, Mohammed Nazif, Hamid Al Amadi and Halim Eﬁndi.

Since the beginning he believe in paying attention to every detail to produce a high quality calligraphy art works, his last achievements is winning Al Burda prize for the international calligraphy competition in Abu Dhabi 2007.

Participated in many local and international competitions and exhibitions. Winner of the Baghdad International calligraphy Festival commendation prize in 1998, the Iraq calligraphy Society prize in Baghdad, 2002. one of our prof back in uni, showed us this animation.. Directed and written by Sylvain Chomet..he did a great job in designing the ugly charcters and the whole story.. Plot outline: "When her grandson is kidnapped during the Tour de France, Madame Souza and her beloved pooch Bruno team up with the Belleville Sisters--an aged song-and-dance team from the days of Fred Astaire--to rescue him"

i love how the their house window was right next to the train station, and whenever a train passess their dog would put his head out the window and would enjoy the speed of the train and the sound..oh and i love it when they decide to have frogs for lunch!! funny! and oh i also enjoyed seeing them playing music using objects around them! amazingg..very special animation.

its like those japanese animation,the story and the whole character design is fascinating..i would recommend you buy buy!! or rent rent!!

EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN is the answer for designers out there to get more creative, to start doing things without worrying so much about the results, trust me it'll give you great results.

"SU: Many would call your approach "experimental." Do you believe this is a fair appraisal?

MV: The term “experimental” is often used as a code for unusable, weird, “crazy” or “going wild”. But I think that is a big misunderstanding, and something I try hard to correct in the classroom. When I teach an experimental class, I am quick to explain that experimentation is a methodology.

SU: What do you think is being implied by that?

MV: It suggests a circular set of steps: setting up an experiment, running the process, analyzing the results and then letting the results guide the next experiment. There is no external aesthetic to experimental work. It is as much about setting criteria and using them to analyze results as it is about the producing of the material. Far from “going wild”, it is a very rigorous exercise that allows a designer to confidently engage in work whose results are unpredictable. "I was comissioned to design and install an interactive installation on the them of 'Show Off'. I covered a 10m wall with 2,500 post-it's inviting the public to write what they wanted to show off about during the exhibition. By moving the post-its from the word 'Show' to 'Off' the piece was constantly altered by it's participants". alex bec

retail Wall graphics at DIFC

this project was done by me and an iraqi calligropher/ graphic designer Wissam Shawkat
at the DIFC ( Dubai International Financial Centre) We have designed around 30 different wall graphics, based on calligrophy compositions.

that was one of the best projects that i have worked on and I hope i will also get the chance to do more work with type and calligrophy.

i just simply love type and callirophy.
